Honeybees have been mysteriously disappearing across the planet, literally vanishing from their hives.

Known as Colony Collapse Disorder, this phenomenon has brought beekeepers to crisis in an industry responsible for producing apples, broccoli, watermelon, onions, cherries and a hundred other fruits and vegetables. Commercia honeybee operations pollinate crops that make up one out of every three bites of food on our tables.

Vanishing of the Bees follows commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and Dave Mendes as they strive to keep their bees healthy and fulfill pollination contracts across the U.S. The film explores the struggles they face as the two friends plead their case on
Capital Hill and travel across the Pacific Ocean in the quest to protect their honeybees.

Filming across the US, in Europe, Australia and Asia, this documentary examines the alarming disappearance of honeybees and the greater meaning it holds about the relationship between mankind and mother earth. As scientists puzzle over the cause, organic
beekeepers indicate alternative reasons for this tragic loss. Conflicting options abound and after years of research, a definitive answer has not been found to this harrowing mystery.

On top of fundamental gardening practices that reduce pests, there are natural repellants that keep unwanted insects and critters out of the home and garden. And beneficial insects like ladybugs can also help a garden flourish. These holistic methods often work better than conventional pesticides and are almost always less expensive.

Working to preserve the health of the bees is also bettering the health of our home and community.

One amazing way to help bees is to become an amateur beekeeper!

It’s easy to have a hive in your garden and the bees will help your local environment flourish. Bees are wonderful to watch and you can get your own honey! To get started you need to get a little equipment, which you can buy or build yourself.

Beekeeping practices vary – but it generally takes about an hour a week through the spring, summer and fall – and then almost nothing over the winter months. From one hive you can get between 20 to 50 pounds of honey. But this varies, depending on the weather. Having your very own honey to share with friends and family is an amazing treat. When you have a beehive – life is sweet!!

We recommend Organic, Biodynamic and Holistic beekeeping practices. If you are just starting out, our advice is DO NOT USE PESTICIDES OR ANTIBIOTICS ON YOUR BEES – even though some may recommend it.

For more information contact your nearest Beekeeping Association or follow these links:

Growing a garden is easy – you can do it! In addition to being a healthy nurturing pastime, gardening is a fantastic way to help honeybees and your neighborhood thrive.

Growing your own vegetables and fruits helps bees, the environment and puts yummy healthy food on your table. Nothing beats the taste of a home grown tomato, or carrot or apple. Planting a fruit tree suited to your climate can yield delicious apples, pears, oranges and other fruits year after year and for free!

Decorative flowers help bees too and brighten up your doorstep. Plant wildflower seeds in your garden, patio pots or window boxes and you will get some friendly fuzzy beautiful bees visiting them. Flowers provide essential nutrition for bees and add the beauty of the bloom to your world.

Community gardens provide a great way for folks to have a patch of their own to grow on, and lots of wonderful people with friendly advice.

Executive Producer

With many years experience in the film industry, Holly Mosher has devoted her efforts to her true passion of uniting political purpose with art. In 2004, she had her directorial debut with Hummingbird, an inspiring documentary about two non-profits in Brazil that work with street children and women who suffer domestic violence. Hummingbird won numerous awards, including Best Human Rights Documentary in Rome and Best Short for Children’s Advocacy at the Artivist Film Festival. Most recently, Holly produced two films about the dangerous and misleading tactics of the pharmaceutical industry. The films, Side Effects and Money Talks: Profits Before Patient Safety, received unprecedented international press attention and have been heralded for raising awareness about a timely and important topic.

To ensure that socially conscious films are brought to the public, Holly teamed up to launch Hummingbird Pictures, an independent film distribution company. Currently, Holly is involved with several documentaries. She co-produced Maybe Baby, which presents the challenges facing older single women trying to get pregnant with modern medical technology. Holly is currently executive producing for Free For All!, a film that explores political scandals in Ohio revolving around election issues. Holly is also in production on her second directorial project, Small Change: World of Difference, where she is following the work of the Nobel Peace Prize winning Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank. She is also a founding partner of Be Well Media, a non-profit which aims to create films that help inspire people to take their health into their own hands.
